The project

The Kometa Project is funded by the INNOLABS Call (Approved with the Executive Act No. 144/13 of 08/02/2017 published on BURP No. 27 of 02/03/2017, amended and supplemented by AD No. 144/37 of 28 / 03/2017).

The call is aimed at financing pilot projects to experiment with innovative solutions, in order to contribute to the promotion of new markets for innovation.
It involves the three main territorial reference systems of SmartPuglia 2020:

  • The regional system of public administration;
  • The regional system of knowledge;
  • The regional system of development.

The project refers to an aggregation of type 2 "Knowledge Community" in the Environment, Security and Territorial Protection domain as defined by the Call - with the involvement of End Users who institutionally perform the function of producing, managing and exchanging knowledge and innovation, with particular attention to the issue of the re-use of documents and public data "open data".

The project is part of the Social Challenge "Cities and Sustainable Territories" as it aims to guarantee the development of integrated approaches for the sustainable management of natural resources, in particular water, and concerns the thematic domain "I. Environment, Security and Territorial Protection ".
The project is promoted by three SMEs (MTM Project Unipersonale - leader, Cinemagica srl, Hevolus srl), a Large Enterprise (Acquedotto Pugliese spa) and a Research Organization (University of Bari - Department of Computer Science).
The Research Organization also plays the role of Research Laboratory, as it is registered in the appropriate Living Lab Partner Catalog with X6M2T51 code through the Knowledge Discovery and Data Engineering Laboratory (KDDE).

General objectives of the project

The project aims to develop, through innovative technologies, new training methods for the maintenance personnel of water distribution and waste water purification plants.

The project is based on the needs expressed by the Autorità Idrica Pugliese (Code RFB 1106 of the catalog). The Autorità Idrica Pugliese (AIP), in fact, with a view to continuing to improve the management and maintenance of the Integrated Water Service (SII) plants, has identified the use of new technologies through virtual reality, immersive and analysis of data the tool for the construction of shared knowledge bases to be used in the training activity of the plant maintenance workers. The Autorità Idrica Pugliese, thanks to this innovative approach, expects to improve and consolidate the processes of sharing know-how in order to:

  • improve the learning curve of the operators;
  • raise security levels;
  • increase the efficiency of the interventions;
  • increase the quality level of the services provided.

The identification of solutions based on these technologies could have applications and benefits also in other contexts in which training plays a key role.

The application of innovative technologies makes the number of errors possible by the operators less, reduces the frequency of maintenance of the plants and therefore guarantees the citizens of the Puglia Region safety and continuity of the water service.

The plants on which the Autorità Idrica Pugliese is responsible are located throughout the region and are currently managed, also under the maintenance profile, as a result of a specific service contract, by Acquedotto Pugliese spa, which is a project partner.

For the realization of the project objectives it was decided to use two technologies fundamentally: Virtual Reality technology, Video Immersive technology and process mining analytics.

The effectiveness of the planned interventions compared to the traditional ones, as well as the compliance with the objectives, will be object of measurement and evaluation during the realization of the project and at the end of the intervention.
